In November 2002 Samsung introduced the ML-1510 monochrome desktop printer. Print speed was OEM-rated at 15 letter-size pages per minute (ppm) with a duty cycle of 15, 000 pages per month. The ML-1750 followed in March 2003, then the host-based ML-1710 in April 2004. Both were built around the 1510 engine, but with print speeds increased to 17 ppm each.
Since its introduction several printers and MFPs have been introduced based on the popular ML-1510 engine. These include, but are not limited to the Xerox Phaser 3116 (2004), Samsung SCX-4200 (2006) - which was the first in the Samsung series to require a chip on the cartridge in place of a fuse, Xerox WorkCentre 3119 (2006), Samsung SCX-4300 (June 2008), and many others.
Printers shipped with 1,000 page yield starter cartridges. Replacement cartridges are OEM-rated at 3,000 pages and have no drum shutter, leaving the drum exposed and easily damaged. All cartridges are nearly identical physically, with some having a fuse, some a chip and others having neither. For those printers requiring a fuse or chip to function properly, these must be replaced each time the cartridge is remanufactured.
