HP introduced the monochrome P4014, P4015 and P4515 printers in April 2008 as the first HP products to include the Eco Highlights label, identifying them as products with environmentally preferable features. These new printers offered print speeds from 45 pages per minute (ppm) to 62 ppm (letter) and duty cycles from 175,000 to 225,000 pages per month.

The P4014 utilizes a 10,000 page standard yield cartridge only, where the P4015 and P4515 use not only the same standard yield cartridge as the P4014 but also a 24,000 page high yield version. Cartridges are similar to those used by the HP 4250 and 4350 printers, but differences are significant enough so as not to be interchangeable, and conversions are cost prohibitive. The overall design is unique to this printer series and cartridges will not fit in any other printer as of this printing.

A chip is mounted in a "cradle" that is heat staked on to the waste bin of both standard and high yield cartridges. A two-part seal pull tab design serves not only as a pull tab for the seal, but also folds to protect a sensor bar located in the mag section of the cartridge.
