In September of 2008 HP announced the release of the Color LaserJet CP2025 printer as a replacement for the Color LaserJet 2605, 2700 and 3600 series. An MFP version, the CM2320 MFP, was released at the same time. Both print up to 21ppm in color and monochrome.

The CP2025 and CM2320 ship with reduced yield (1,200 page) introductory (starter) cartridges that are physically smaller than the replacement cartridges and require dedicated chips. Replacement cartridges are 2,800 (color) and 3,500 (black) and also require dedicated chips. There is no drum shutter, so replacement cartridges are shipped with orange shipping protectors.

Identification of starter vs replacement cores is easy, since the word introductory is printed on the label of the starter cartridge. Also, there is a difference in their appearance. Both the toner hopper and waste bin reservoirs of the introductory versions are inset, making the reservoirs smaller and unable to hold the full toner load or waste toner generated with the replacement versions.

Canon introduced their own versions in May 2009 based on the same print engine. The LBP-7200c was introduced in Asia as the Lasershot, and as the i-SENSYS in Europe. Japan received the Satera branded model in July 2009. The LBP-7200c, like its HP counterparts, ships with starter cartridges, and the differences between them and the replacement cartridges are the same as with the HP versions.

Conversion of introductory cartridges to replacement cartridges for either HP or Canon would require extensive modification and is not recommended.
