The Canon LaserClass 510 fax/scan/copy/print multi-function device was introduced in May 2003. Originally priced at $1695, the LC510 provides a low cost "all-in-one" desktop unit for home and small offices with mid-volume faxing and low-volume copying and printing needs.
The LC510 has a print speed of up to 15 pages per minute (ppm), print resolution of 1200 x 600 dpi, a monthly duty cycle of 8,000 pages, and utilizes a Canon FX8 print cartridge with an OEM rated yield of 3,500 pages. The cartridge design presents no new technology, and there is no electronic chip on the unit. Remanufacturing is fairly straightforward, although the hopper and waste bin sections are held together with pins that can be difficult to remove.
The print cartridge appears very similar to that used in the HP® 1200 printer, both internally and externally. The most noticeable difference is that the shutter actuator lever is on the opposite side of the cartridge from that of the 1200 cartridge. The cartridge pin configuration is nearly the same as the 1200's, and removal can be accomplished using the HP 1200 pin removal kit. The 510's page yield is equivalent to the 1200's high-capacity cartridge of 3,500 pages.
